He huddled on the sofa, the phone vibrating incessantly, its noise an irritating pulse in the otherwise silent house. The curtains were drawn, plunging the room into a deep, unsettling gloom. The darkness seemed to press in on him, suffocating, constricting.

He curled into a tight ball, his knees drawn up to his chest, as if trying to disappear, to become invisible within the shadows. He wished he could just shut off the world.
