The notification buzzed, a harsh sound in the quiet apartment. "Nearby! Alex from 'StarrySkies' is also in your city!" Sarah’s hand trembled as she swiped the message away, the screen momentarily blurring before her eyes. The familiar avatar of a smiling astronaut stared back at her from their chat history. He'd been so supportive during her recent family issues, offering a virtual shoulder to cry on. Now, a cold knot twisted in her stomach.

She backed away from her desk, the chair scraping loudly against the wooden floor. Every shadow seemed to lengthen, transforming familiar objects into looming shapes. Her breath hitched, catching in her throat. She glanced at the window, suddenly acutely aware of the darkness pressing in from outside.

Her gaze darted around the room. She felt the urge to barricade herself in her bedroom, a childish instinct she couldn't suppress.
