He chewed on his lower lip, a nervous habit he'd thought he’d broken years ago. His mouth felt dry, and he kept swallowing, trying to moisten his tongue. The fluorescent lights overhead seemed to hum, a high-pitched whine that grated on his ears.

She felt a knot forming in her stomach. Sarah had been his closest friend since childhood. This competition felt… wrong. Undeniably, deeply wrong.

His gaze flickered towards the window, then away. He wanted to escape, to run, to vanish. Anything to avoid the inevitable confrontation. The prospect of facing her after, regardless of the outcome, was making him want to disappear.
