The antique music box sat on the shelf, its painted ballerina mocking Leo with its unchanging composure. Maya was reminiscing about their childhood, about the summer they’d found the box in their grandmother's attic. She spoke of dusty treasures and shared wonder.

Leo felt a cold knot tighten in his stomach. He remembered the musty smell, the shadows that danced in the corners of the room. He recalled the moment the ballerina’s painted eyes seemed to shift, to follow his movements.

"Remember how amazing it was?" Maya gushed, her face illuminated by the memory. Leo's fingers clenched, nails digging into his palms. He didn’t dare speak, didn’t dare break the spell she seemed to be under. He looked away, focusing on the chipped paint on the music box.
