The musty smell of the secondhand bookstore clung to Amelia as she ran a hand along the spines. She'd been feeling off-kilter all day, a prickling unease settling deep in her stomach. She plucked a worn copy of *Wuthering Heights* and flipped it open, her fingers itching. A crumpled piece of paper fluttered out. Her breath hitched.

She picked it up, her pulse quickening. The handwriting was spidery, the ink faded. Words she couldn't immediately decipher. Her gaze darted to the shop door, then back to the letter. She felt a cold sweat on her brow. She needed to leave, to get away from this place.

The letter spoke of secrets, of a woman hidden away. Amelia’s hands trembled as she clutched the paper, the world around her tilting. She backed away from the shelves, bumping into a display. The shop bell clanged, a jarring sound.
