He found the letter tucked inside a copy of *The Picture of Dorian Gray*, the pages yellowed with age. His heart began to hammer against his ribs. He felt a chill despite the warm library. It was the words, scrawled in hurried cursive, that got to him.

He scanned the words. Whispers, warnings, names he didn't recognize. The air seemed to grow thick, making it hard to breathe. He glanced at the closed library door, then back at the letter.

A shadow flickered at the corner of his eye. He jumped, his muscles tensing. His palms became slick. He had to know more, but the very act of reading felt like a trespass.

The silence of the library pressed in, suffocating him. He quickly folded the letter and shoved it into his pocket, eager to be away from the place.
