The streetlamp cast long, dancing shadows as she read the letter. She’d bought the book from a street vendor. The wind whipped at her hair, making the letter dance in her hand. Her chest felt heavy, her breathing shallow.

The words detailed a planned betrayal. Her heart raced, her vision blurring. She recognized the names. The letter was a warning. She had to do something.

She looked over her shoulder, a prickle of goosebumps breaking out on her arms. Was someone watching her? She couldn't shake the feeling of being observed, scrutinized.

She crumpled the letter in her fist and began to walk briskly, her pace quickening with each step. Her destination was unknown.
