The afternoon sun slanted through the window, highlighting dust motes dancing in the air. John was sketching. He’d left his journal on the desk, open. He turned to face his roommate. "Liam?"

Liam continued drawing, seemingly oblivious. John felt a coldness spread through him. Liam had the habit of chewing on his lip when he was nervous, which he was doing now.

He felt a sudden need to flee, to disappear. His breath hitched in his throat. Every inch of his body felt exposed, vulnerable. He wanted to shout, to confront Liam, but the words simply wouldn't come.
