“No,” he mumbled, the word barely audible above the rhythmic tap of the rain against the windowpane. He stared at the email, its sterile language doing nothing to diminish the pain. His chest felt heavy, as if weighted down with a thousand unspoken disappointments.

He pushed his chair back from the desk, unable to sit any longer. The room seemed suddenly unfamiliar, the shadows growing long and menacing. He started to pace, his steps erratic, his thoughts a jumbled mess. He needed air, needed escape.
