A shiver traced its path down Sarah’s spine as she read the letter. Her breath hitched. She felt as though the floor beneath her was about to crumble. The eviction notice felt like a physical blow. The apartment, the place where she felt safe, turned hostile.

She clutched her chest, as if to physically restrain her heart from beating so fast. Her vision blurred, and tears welled up in her eyes. The weight of the world settled on her shoulders. She felt a deep, piercing ache in her stomach.

She walked to the window, and stared out. The world outside looked beautiful and inviting, but she felt trapped. Her hands trembled as she clutched the curtains, a silent battle being waged within her.
