Gemotions

The aroma of freshly baked bread usually brought comfort to Maria. Today, it was a torment. Mrs. Thornton, her neighbor, had always been kind, offering her home-baked goods and friendly conversation. Now, after discovering the hidden vault in her basement, the bread seemed to taste like ashes.

Maria sat at the table, picking at the crust, her appetite gone. The friendly smiles, the casual chats – were they genuine? Or were they a carefully constructed facade? She felt exposed, vulnerable, as though she’d been living in a play, unaware of the script.

She pushed the plate away, unable to eat another bite. The house felt too small, too ordinary, to contain the unsettling knowledge she now possessed. She wanted to run, to escape the suffocating feeling of being watched.
