The rusted metal box, unearthed in her grandmother’s neglected garden, felt cold against Sarah's trembling hands. She hadn’t been back to the old house in years, a lifetime of dust settling between her and that chapter. Now, standing alone amidst overgrown weeds and forgotten roses, a jumble of emotions churned inside her. Her breath hitched.

She hesitated, then popped the lock, the sound echoing unnaturally loud in the sudden quiet. Inside, layered in yellowed newspaper, were items she didn't recognize. A tarnished silver locket, a dried-out tube of lipstick, a worn copy of a book she’d never read. A coldness spread through her.

Panic clawed at her throat, constricting her airway. Whose life was this? Why had she buried it? The setting sun cast long, distorted shadows across the overgrown garden, and the trees seemed to lean in, as if to observe her. She dropped the box and backed away, stumbling over a root.
