I saw the words and a chill went through me. "Condominium Conversion." I looked at the letter, then looked around the room, trying to find something familiar, something stable. My breath hitched.

I pressed my palms against my temples, as if to ward off a headache. The noise of the city, the distant sirens, the neighbor's music, all seemed to intensify, to press in on me. I felt the overwhelming impulse to simply hide.

I sank onto the sofa, burying my face in my hands. The thought of losing this place, losing this life, caused a deep ache within. The future, once a distant prospect, now felt like a terrifying tidal wave.
