"I distinctly remember the fireflies," Maria insisted, her voice rising. "Thousands of them, blinking in the twilight. We spent hours catching them." David simply shook his head, a wry smile playing on his lips.

"It was a clear night. We were stargazing. Remember that meteor shower?" His tone was patient, almost patronizing.

She slammed the picture album shut, the sound echoing in the quiet room. Her chest felt constricted, as if a vise was tightening around it. The way he was dismissing her… it was driving her mad. She could almost feel the cool damp grass between her toes, the gentle glow of the fireflies in her outstretched hands. The injustice of it all was almost unbearable.
