The waiting room seemed to shrink, the walls closing in on David. He reread the lab results, his eyes darting back and forth, trying to make sense of the nonsensical. His blood type was wrong. His cholesterol levels were through the roof. The image on the screen, a scan of someone else’s insides, looked like a foreign landscape. He felt a cold sweat prickle his skin, and the air in his lungs felt thin, insufficient. He balled his fists so tightly his nails bit into his palms. He just wanted to get out of there, far away from the sterile, deceptive walls.
