The bright screen was mocking her. A friend request from Jason Matthews, the guy who had systematically excluded her from everything in high school. The one who had always made her feel invisible. She felt her face flush, heat spreading from her cheeks to her chest.

She slammed her hand on the desk, the force of the action startling the cat, who jumped down and slinked away. She felt a tremor run through her. She felt like screaming. She stood up abruptly, pacing back and forth in her small apartment.

She stopped at the window, staring out at the cityscape. The flashing lights and bustling streets offered no comfort, only served to amplify her inner turmoil. She felt the familiar grip of unease tighten around her.
