The phone felt heavy in Elena's hand. She dialed, then hung up. Repeatedly. She couldn't bring herself to call her mother, not when her voice was thick with that awful feeling, that internal pressure. The rumor had been confirmed. The new graduate, the one who'd barely been around long enough to learn the photocopier, earned a higher salary.

Her fingers tapped restlessly on the desk. All the projects she had painstakingly completed, the deadlines met, the team leads…

She looked at her reflection in the darkened screen of her monitor. Her eyes burned with a strange, angry heat. She needed to get away, to leave it all behind.
