Liam slammed the car door a little harder than necessary. He hated traffic, but tonight it felt like a personal attack. He was already running behind. The restaurant would be packed. He envisioned the disappointed look on Sarah’s face. He could feel a pressure building behind his eyes, a throbbing that intensified with each red light.

He burst through the door, scanning the room. He saw her, at a table near the window. She was talking to another man, her smile bright and easy. A sudden, unwelcome heat flushed his face. He walked over, the knot in his stomach growing tighter with each step.

"I thought you said you were working late," he heard himself say, the words sharper than he intended.
