"Again?" Mark muttered, shoving his phone into his pocket. He stared at the pizza box on the counter. He had ordered it, planned the evening. They were supposed to be having a cozy night in, but she'd cancelled last minute, with the usual flimsy excuse about her 'sister' needing help. His fingers itched with an urge to throw the box across the room.

He’d spent the day anticipating this. Anticipating her. He’d cleaned the apartment, bought the flowers, gotten the good wine. He felt a hollowness spreading through him, a feeling that something wasn't quite right. He clicked on his computer, aimlessly browsing the internet, the glow of the screen reflecting in his vacant eyes.
