The elevator doors chimed open, and Chloe practically sprinted down the hallway. He'd said he'd be waiting. She pictured him, leaning against the door of his apartment, a small, knowing smile on his face. She’d even gotten a new dress, a shimmering emerald green she knew he loved.

She rang the doorbell. No answer. She rang again, longer this time. Still nothing. She felt a prickling sensation on her skin, an uneasy feeling. His car was in the parking lot. She could see it from her vantage point. Why wasn’t he answering the door?

A sudden, sharp movement caught her eye. Across the hall, a woman emerged from the apartment. The woman was wearing a familiar sweater. The same one he had on in the picture he had sent last week.
