The email notification pinged, the sound sharp and intrusive in the otherwise quiet apartment. Maya let out a small, involuntary hiss. She stared at the screen, the words "High School Reunion" burning against the blue light. Her shoulders slumped. Years of avoiding the past, of reinventing herself, and now this.

She clicked the delete button, her finger hovering for a moment before she pressed down. The email vanished, but the feeling lingered, a prickling sensation under her skin. She glanced at the chipped nail polish on her fingers, then at the cluttered bookshelf. It all felt… insufficient. She wanted to scream.
