He shoved the acceptance letter into his backpack with a viciousness that tore the corner of the envelope. He hadn't bothered to read the entire email, only scanned the important parts, but that was enough. The color drained from his face as he read it. The scholarship. Gone. His future, which had seemed so bright just yesterday, suddenly felt dim. The thought of having to return home, to admit his failure, sent a wave of nausea through him. He leaned against the locker, the cold metal doing nothing to soothe the heat that bloomed on his neck.
