"Unbelievable!" Amelia spat the word, her voice tight with fury. She slammed her laptop shut, the sudden movement causing the stack of papers on her desk to tremble. The financial aid officer’s voice, calm and detached, still echoed in her ears. A computer error. That was it. An error that would upend her entire life. She ran her fingers through her hair, tangling in the knots. Her carefully laid plans, the years of hard work, all for nothing. The injustice of it all burned in her chest, a bitter, acrid taste on her tongue.
