Michael yanked his tie loose, the knot suddenly feeling like a noose. The email, with its cheerful corporate font, had announced the acquisition. He'd been expecting the news, of course, but that didn't make the reality any easier to swallow. His stomach churned, a familiar feeling of unease.

He pushed back from his desk, the chair screeching on the carpet. Everything, it seemed, was designed to irritate him today. The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, a constant, annoying hum. He stalked towards the window, staring out at the cityscape.

His hands clenched into fists at his sides. He had envisioned himself moving up the ranks, a respectable career at a company that felt like home. Now, everything was uncertain. His future hung precariously in the balance.
