The world seemed to shrink around her, the walls of the apartment closing in. Maria reread the eviction notice, each word a fresh jab. A cold sweat slicked her palms. She gripped the edge of the kitchen counter, her knuckles white.

She felt a wave of nausea roll through her. She needed to get out, to breathe. She went to the window and threw it open, hoping for some fresh air, but all she smelled was the stale scent of the city. She pressed her forehead against the cool glass, the sudden, sharp ache in her temples intensifying.
