He ripped the notice from the door, a violent gesture. James crumpled the paper in his fist, crushing it until the ink smeared on his palm. His breathing was heavy, ragged. He kicked a discarded pizza box across the floor, the cardboard skidding and slamming into the wall.

He slammed his hand on the counter, making a plate jump. The small apartment felt suffocating, too small to contain his anger. He wanted to scream, to break something. He grabbed his keys and stormed out, the door slamming shut behind him.
