The attic air hung thick and heavy, smelling of mothballs and forgotten things. Amelia slammed the lid shut on the dusty trunk, the metal hinges groaning in protest. Another fruitless hour spent sifting through her mother's keepsakes. Why did her parents have to be such hoarders? She pushed a stray strand of hair from her face, sighing.

She almost tripped over a box labeled "Miscellaneous." Inside, nestled amongst yellowed photographs and dried corsages, was a crisp, folded sheet of paper. Her mother’s familiar handwriting. "Draft - Resignation from…" Amelia squinted, pulling the paper closer. Her breath caught. This wasn’t a memo about a club. This was her mother's resignation from a high-powered law firm – a firm she’d stayed at for decades.

A knot formed in Amelia’s stomach. The letter spoke of creative differences, a feeling that her talents weren’t being used to their full potential. Amelia crumpled the paper in her hand, the sudden pressure causing her knuckles to whiten. Why hadn't her mother ever mentioned this? Why the secrecy? This was a whole new version of her mother, and Amelia didn't know how to digest it.
