"So... that's it?" Amelia said, her voice tight, a thin, brittle sound. The sunlight streaming through the coffee shop window seemed to mock her. Across the country. For a stupid internship. For *him*.

Her fingers drummed a rapid tattoo on the table, the metallic clinking of her bracelet a grating counterpoint to the easy chatter around them. She looked at Chloe, at her beaming face, and wanted to hurl the latte in her face.

Chloe just smiled, oblivious. "It's going to be amazing!" she’d said, as if that simple word could make everything better. Amelia felt a cold weight settle in her stomach.

She excused herself and went to the bathroom, wanting to be alone, to finally let the tears she knew were building up, to finally be able to breathe again.
