The car keys felt heavy in his hand. He gripped them so tightly his knuckles were white. "Across the country," he muttered, the words tasting like ash in his mouth. He'd envisioned a future with her, a simple, comfortable life in their familiar town.

He spun on his heel and strode back into the house, his steps echoing in the sudden quiet. He knew he'd promised to help her pack, to be supportive. But right now, the thought made him want to lash out.

He went into the kitchen and ripped open the fridge. The sight of the half-eaten leftovers, a stark reminder of their shared meals, made his chest tighten. He slammed the door closed with unnecessary force.
