“Fine,” he said, his voice clipped. “Whatever.” The words felt hollow, inadequate, but he couldn't bring himself to say anything else. Across the country. The words stuck in his throat, a bitter pill he couldn't swallow.

He sat back in his chair, leaning back against the cool plastic of the booth. He watched her, a mix of disbelief and annoyance washing over him. The restaurant was crowded, but he felt utterly alone.
