“Another successful surgery,” Dr. Anya declared, shedding her surgical scrubs. She felt invigorated, the weight of responsibility replaced by a light sense of accomplishment. The patient was stable. She felt her hands, the instrument of her skill, and smiled. She would call her former supervisor, Dr. Ramirez. She'd been her mentor for years.

She picked up her phone and dialed the number she had come to know so well. The phone rang, but there was no response. She decided to go directly to Dr. Ramirez's home.

The house was dark, the curtains drawn. A “Sold” sign was in the yard. A message was pinned to the front door, handwritten: "Leaving. Best of luck, Anya." The relief she had just been feeling was replaced by something cold and empty.
