The house felt alive. Alex sat in his armchair, a dog at his feet, with a book in his hand. He’d spent months turning this old house into his haven, and now, he’d finished. The afternoon sun cast long shadows across the living room, and the silence was broken only by the crackle of the fireplace. It was perfect.

As he went to stoke the fire, he noticed something unusual: the fireplace seemed to be flush with the wall. He ran his hand over the brick, and felt a slight give. Pushing harder, a section of the wall gave way, revealing a hidden room. He felt a thrill of anticipation.
