“Well, I’ll be…” Mark muttered, staring at the television. He’d been channel surfing, bored on a Sunday afternoon, when he landed on a talent show. A contestant, a young man with a hesitant smile, was about to perform. And then the opening chords of Mark’s song, “Fading Echoes,” filled the room.

His heart pounded. He knew the song intimately. He could have predicted the next note. He watched, captivated, as the young man sang. His voice was different, his interpretation fresh and new. Mark loved it.

He sat forward in his chair, feeling something warm and expansive within him. The contestant was a good singer, and Mark thought he understood the song. He felt a quiet pride rise up, a sense of rightness, like a missing piece clicking into place.

He remained there until the performance was over, not moving a muscle.
