The small, dimly lit jazz club was his sanctuary. Maya, nursing a scotch, enjoyed the mellow atmosphere. The band was taking a break, and then the lights dimmed. A lone saxophonist stepped forward. Maya recognized the opening notes immediately. Her song, “Midnight Bloom.”

She'd always imagined the song with a piano. But the saxophone rendition was phenomenal. A feeling of lightness settled over her, a contentment she'd rarely experienced. She closed her eyes, letting the music wash over her.

She took a slow, deep breath, savouring the scent of the wood. The saxophonist played with an emotional power that made her feel connected to something much larger than herself. She just listened, smiling in the dark. A subtle smile.
