The morning sun spilled across Maya's face, warm and golden, as she stretched, every muscle humming with contentment. She swung her legs over the side of the bed, a smile already playing on her lips. Today was the day she'd finally finish painting the mural in the community center. She felt the giddy rush of excitement building in her chest, a lightness that made her want to skip. Then, a text. It was Liam. Her heart skipped a beat. "Can we talk? Urgent."

She met Liam at their usual coffee shop, the scent of roasted beans filling the air. He looked pale, his usually bright eyes clouded over. "I'm moving," he blurted out, the words hitting Maya like a physical blow. He explained about a job offer, a new beginning across the country. The world tilted slightly. She managed a weak, "Oh." A knot formed in her stomach. The warmth from the morning vanished, replaced by a cold dread.
