He hummed as he chopped vegetables, the rhythmic thud of the knife against the cutting board a soothing counterpoint to the music playing in the kitchen. John’s life was exactly as he wanted it. His apartment was cozy, his work was challenging but rewarding, and his evenings were spent with friends, laughing and sharing stories. His phone buzzed, a notification from his best friend, David. It was a video call request.

David's face popped up on the screen, looking unusually serious. “I got an offer,” he began, his voice tight. “A really good one. In Seattle.” A wave of heat flushed John’s face, then the color drained away. He stared at the screen, unable to speak. Seattle. Thousands of miles away. The simple joy he felt just moments before evaporated, leaving a hollow ache in its place. The knife slipped from his hand, clattering to the floor.
