The weight room smelled of sweat and determination. David had spent the last several months transforming himself, both physically and mentally. He had been so focused. He felt unstoppable. Every rep, every set, brought him closer to a personal goal. He had worked incredibly hard on his anatomy class to support his athletic aims.

He had expected a good grade. The notification flashed onto his phone. C. His muscles felt suddenly heavy. The elation, that familiar burn, was gone. Doubt crept in, a shadow across the landscape he’d so carefully built.

He rubbed his temples, a dull ache throbbing there. The music in the gym continued its relentless beat, but the energy had shifted. He went to the water fountain and drank, the cool water doing nothing to soothe his sudden unease.
