The silence in the car was a physical weight. Evelyn, her grandmother's words still echoing in her ears, gripped the steering wheel so tightly her knuckles were white. Her grandmother had announced she was joining the local Hare Krishna temple.

Every turn of the wheel felt like a rebellion, a direct confrontation. The radio’s cheerful music grated on her nerves. She flipped it off with a savage gesture. The landscape outside, normally soothing, now seemed hostile, the trees and houses mocking her.

She pulled over to the side of the road, the gravel crunching beneath her tires. She leaned her head against the steering wheel, a wave of despair washing over her.
