The office was bare, a sterile space devoid of the laughter and wisdom that Professor Ramirez had brought to it. Amelia found herself staring at the empty desk, her stomach twisting. Her mentor, the person who had shaped her career, had simply vanished, leaving behind only an automated email.

She sat down, her body stiff with a sudden feeling of being let down. She felt as if she had been slapped. She felt tears starting to fall. She stood again and paced, her steps uneven.

She grabbed a nearby box and threw it across the room. Amelia felt an intense desire to shatter something, to destroy something. She would find her, she would find a way to make her understand.
