Sarah slammed the door, the sound echoing through the small apartment. Her hands were clenched into fists at her sides, nails digging into her palms. She needed air, needed to get away from the sickening sweetness of lies that had been poured over her for years. Mark, her "consultant," had been a barista. A barista! The venom of betrayal coiled in her stomach. She’d believed him when he talked about international travel, high-powered meetings, and the thrilling complexities of his career. He’d even critiqued her own, perfectly decent accounting job.

She paced the length of her living room, her breath coming in ragged gasps. The framed photographs of them, laughing, celebrating birthdays, hung mockingly on the wall. Each smiling face was now a cruel reminder of the deception. The expensive bottle of wine he’d brought over last week – a gift, a symbol of their friendship. It tasted like ashes now.

The phone buzzed. It was him. She stared at the screen, heart hammering against her ribs. She wanted to scream, to shatter something, to make him *understand*. Instead, she turned off the phone and threw it onto the sofa. The silence felt worse.
