Her voice was a low growl. "I don't understand," Emily said into the phone, her words clipped. The words felt foreign. Her friend, Jessica, on the other end of the line, offered a shaky explanation. Emily stared at the screen of the phone, and found herself wanting to break it.

She pushed herself away from her desk, pacing in her small office. She kicked a chair, but it did not satisfy. The meticulous planning, the anticipation, the months of secret coordination—gone. The feeling was a churning in her stomach, a bitter taste in her mouth. She could taste the betrayal. The world seemed to shrink.
