The invitation's arrival was the straw that broke the camel's back. David had been struggling all week, and this… this was too much. He crumpled the paper in his hands, crushing it with a violence that surprised even himself.

He stormed into the backyard, kicking a stray soccer ball with excessive force. The ball sailed over the fence, disappearing into the neighbor's yard. He didn't care. The tightness in his chest was almost unbearable, a physical manifestation of the resentment that gnawed at him.

He pictured the triumphant smiles of the people who had made his life a misery. The urge to destroy something was almost overwhelming.
