She felt a tremor run through her, starting in her toes and ending in the tight knot in her stomach. Her pulse quickened. The discovery, the unwelcome news about Clara’s party, registered as a blow. After months of painstaking effort! Her jaw clenched, muscles protesting against the involuntary rigidity.

She stalked across her room, her movements stiff and jerky. Her meticulously planned costume party, the theme carefully chosen, the decorations meticulously arranged… all in jeopardy. The thought of all that work rendered futile fueled a growing unease.

She grabbed a nearby pillow and threw it against the wall, the impact doing little to soothe the growing tension within. She wouldn’t be intimidated. She would fight for her night, for the attention, for everything she had worked for.
