He replayed the announcement in his head, each word a fresh wound. The injustice of it all. He walked home, the city lights blurring through his tear-filled eyes. He had the skills, the experience, the drive. He felt like someone had stolen a part of him, a piece of his future.

He kicked a small stone, sending it skittering across the pavement. He longed to explode, to destroy something, to scream until his voice was hoarse.

He unlocked his apartment door, the silence within seeming to amplify the turmoil he felt. He dropped his briefcase to the floor, and, without another thought, he went straight to the liquor cabinet.
