The casual way he dropped the bomb felt like a deliberate act of cruelty. The news was bad enough, but the delivery felt like a knife twist. David had just casually stated that he was moving to Europe. The cafe buzzed around them, a stark contrast to the boiling silence inside her. The air seemed to have thickened. Her breath came in short, shallow gasps.

"Wow," she finally managed, the word a harsh exhale. "Just like that? No consideration?" She gripped her coffee cup so tightly, she was afraid she might shatter it. The bitterness of the coffee suddenly mirrored the taste in her mouth.

David looked at her, his expression tinged with confusion. She stood abruptly, shoving her chair back with a violent scrape. "I need some air," she muttered, turning and nearly running from the cafe. The sound of the door closing behind her was like a gunshot.
