Her breath hitched in her throat, a choked gasp. Standing at her kitchen sink, she stared at the gleaming, granite countertops of the house across the street. The house of the Martins, who had recently had their entire kitchen remodeled. They had gone on and on about the cost, how it was necessary, how it was an investment. Now, she understood.

She was struggling to pay for basic repairs to her appliances. She felt a burning ache in her chest. She rinsed the dishes with excessive force, the water hitting the porcelain with a harsh, staccato beat.
