The vast expanse of the baseball field felt cold and unforgiving. Michael stood alone, staring at the empty batting cage, a place he usually associated with triumph and exhilaration. His glove hung limply from his hand. He’d dedicated years to perfecting his swing, to chasing his dream of playing for the team. Now, he’d been cut.

He felt a deep void, an emptiness that stretched out before him like the vast green space. The sun, usually a welcome companion, seemed to mock him with its brightness. He felt like his heart had been bruised. He was utterly alone in his grief.
