A persistent ache thrummed behind Michael’s eyes, a reflection of the emptiness that had settled in his core. He hadn't spoken more than a handful of words all day. The world seemed to move at a faster pace than he could manage.

He ambled past a yard sale, the bright colours of the items jarring. Then, a flash of recognition. Sitting on a blanket, surrounded by other cast-offs, was his old teddy bear. The one he had loved. The one he had named Captain Calico.

He stood frozen, his breath catching in his throat. He reached out a hesitant hand. The bear was tattered, his fur worn thin, but the familiar shape, the button eyes, the faded red of his tiny sailor's hat – it was undeniably him. He felt a sting in his eyes, a sensation unfamiliar in its intensity. He paid the asking price, careful to avoid the seller's gaze, and walked away, clutching Captain Calico to his chest.
