The old house felt colder than usual, the drafty windows whistling a mournful tune. Eliza wrapped her shawl tighter, seeking some semblance of warmth. Loneliness was a cold companion, its presence constant. The silence in the house, broken only by the ticking of the clock, seemed to magnify the emptiness within her.

She found it while sorting through her late husband's belongings: a leather wallet, tucked away in the back of his closet. Inside, a thick roll of bills. She hadn't known he had that kind of money. A sudden heat flushed through her at the discovery.

She felt a strange mixture of relief and confusion. The money could cover all the expenses, all her worries. She could finally relax, but it came with a sting of guilt. She had never known. The weight in her hand, the money a mystery, filled her with a sense of unease.
