The news had hit her like a punch to the gut. The DNA test, a quest for knowledge, had instead unraveled the tapestry of her life. She’d always felt like a misfit, but now there was a tangible reason. She was adopted. She sat on the porch swing, and felt a profound sense of isolation.

She looked at the garden she meticulously tended, at the colorful flowers she nurtured, and realized they were a symbol of what she didn’t know: her roots. She picked at a dead leaf, a futile gesture. She wanted to be held, but there was nobody.
